In 1993, he earned a BA in Art History from the University of Toledo. Afterward, he worked as an assistant for the internationally known glass artist Jon Kuhn in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Martin returned to Toledo and earned his law degree from the University of Toledo College of Law, being admitted to the Ohio Bar in 1998.
